The Public Sector Equality Duty

The Equality Act 2010 introduced a single Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) which applies to public bodies including maintained schools and Academies.

This PSED extends to all protected characteristics:

Race

Religion or Belief

Disability

Sexual Orientation

Sex

Pregnancy and Maternity

Age

Gender Reassignment

The PSED (sometimes referred to as the general duty) requires us, in carrying out our functions, to have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act.
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
  • Foster good relations across all characteristics between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

The Government has also introduced new specific duties which are intended to help us meet our obligations under the PSED, (the PSED is set out in the Act whereas these specific duties are set out in secondary legislation).

The specific duties regulations require schools to:

  • Publish information to demonstrate how they are complying with the PSED.
  • Prepare and publish equality objectives.

All Hallows is committed to raising the attainment of all pupils; we have a number of groups in school where additional support is required to ensure our pupils can achieve their full potential, these groups include pupils who come to us with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities and those from homes where English is not the first language.

Staff at All Hallows have a range of support mechanisms that aid the teaching and learning aspirations of all pupils but also those that target the specific and individual needs of pupils who need it most, these include:

  • Specialist EAL provision for pupils whose first language is not English
  • Dedicated Intervention programmes to support pupils across all stages and subjects
  • Programmes focusing on raising literacy standards in English
  • Continual monitoring and assessment of pupil attainment
  • Assemblies dealing with relevant issues
  • Involvement with the local communities, through our young volunteer and coaching programmes
  • Working to increase Parental and Partner Engagement strategies; such as Home School Agreement

We also recognise the need to consult and engage with wider aspects of our community in areas that demonstrate our commitment to ensuring equality for all, this has led to a number of awards in recognition of our efforts, including;
